About Me | Bruce Thomson

I began my journey in wildlife photography at a young age, during the era of film, with a camera and two lenses that my uncle had generously provided. My first photographs were black and white, developed and printed in a makeshift darkroom at my home in rural New South Wales.

Over time, my photography evolved, influenced not only by advances in technology but also by the passionate wildlife enthusiasts and experts I have met along the way. After completing university, I spent several years in Alice Springs, conducting fauna surveys, pursuing threatened species, and engaging in botanical research. In 1993, I relocated to Queensland, where I worked with National Parks and reignited my passion for wildlife, particularly fauna.

Throughout my career, one constant interest has been bats. I’ve always been captivated by these often-overlooked creatures, and I’ve found that even among dedicated wildlife professionals, bats remain relatively unknown. In 1989, I published a field guide to the bats of the Northern Territory, and since then, I’ve contributed images to nearly all subsequent mammal guides, both national and regional. As you explore the galleries on this website, you will find a dedicated section for Australian bats, featuring the most comprehensive collection of images ever assembled for our native species. Many of these images are now featured in our new App on Australian Bats (iOS and Android).

While bats remain a special focus, I also photograph a wide range of other subjects, as seen in the diverse galleries showcased here.

At present, I supply images to various nonprofit conservation organizations, including Bush Heritage, FAME, the South Endeavour Trust, and numerous national park services. My work is also featured in wildlife magazines and by artists seeking reference material. My images have appeared in some unexpected places, such as an interpretive panel on bats in a small zoo in Vanuatu, and a larger panel at a Canadian zoo (which may have been updated since).

My work is represented by Nature Picture Library in Bristol, UK.
